Sandustry Tips — Pro Tactics, Pitfalls & Shortcuts

The curated tip file for Sandustry Early Access. Whether you are 10 minutes into your first save or 40 hours deep into a Tier 6 megabase, these are the hard-won lessons that separate struggling pioneers from smooth-running factory barons. Tips reflect Early Access v0.5.6 (September 3, 2026) and are tagged by category; mechanics may shift as Early Access evolves.

🌱 New Player Survival Tips

  • 1. Always dig staircases, never straight down
Falling into caverns is the #1 cause of early death and flood catastrophes. Dig 45° slopes.
  • 2. Find water before building your first Shaker
A Shaker without Wet Sand produces nothing. Locate an aquifer first, then commit to a factory spot.
  • 3. Wet Sand formula: 1 Dry Sand + 1 Water = 2 Wet Sand
The 2x output multiplier means water is your primary resource — protect it at all costs.
  • 4. Build overflow drains from day one
Aquifer breaches happen unexpectedly. A 2-block-deep drain pit around your shaft saves the entire factory.
  • 5. Never store Dry Sand near water
Sand exposed to water turns into Wet Sand and starts settling prematurely, clumping your storage bins.
  • 6. Slag builds up 3x faster than Gold
For every 25 Gold you produce, you create 75 Slag. Plan your Slag exit path before your first Shaker cycle.
  • 7. Save 100 Gold before approaching the Research Terminal
You need that much to unlock Logistics Tier 1 (Conveyors) — the foundation of all automation.

💧 Fluid Physics & Thermal Tips

  • 1. Fluids leak diagonally through corner block junctions
In the Noita-engine descendant Sandustry uses, water and lava bleed through diagonal single-corner joins. Always use T-junctions or double-layer basins.
  • 2. Water freezes instantly on contact with Snow
Drop Snow into Water to create Ice bridges — useful in artifact rooms with Frostbed-above-Water puzzles.
  • 3. Steam rises through chimneys to the ceiling automatically
No pump required. Place Cryoblaster vents at the top to recondense — get free vertical water transport.
  • 4. Lava maintains temperature forever once ignited
A single Cinder basin ignited by a Flamethrower is a permanent infinite heat source — use it for Steam loops and Slag roasting.
  • 5. Ice cannot be mined without a lined catch basin below
Ice melts into Water when broken. Without containment, you will flood the shaft under it.
  • 6. Never route Lava pipes through thermal machinery zones
Lava ignites Wood belts and destroys organic filters. Keep Lava channels at least 2 blocks from production lines.
  • 7. Steam pressure will blow open sealed chambers
Never hermetically seal a water-lava contact zone. Always leave a vertical vent opening at the top.

🏭 Factory Pitfalls & Automation Tips

  • 1. Shakers process fast — do not overfeed them
Connecting a fast excavator belt directly to a Shaker inlet without a buffer funnel causes overflow spillage.
  • 2. Launchers provide vertical lift when submerged
For taller lifts, chain Launchers in sequence with intermediate collection pools.
  • 3. Filter Walls (R-key) sort by material whitelist
Set slots to whitelist specific items — other materials are blocked or redirected. Essential for multi-material sorting.
  • 4. Kinetic Press requires minimum 25 blocks of drop height
Below 25 blocks the crushing reaction does not trigger. 15–24 yields ~8% partial crushing. 25+ guarantees 100% shatter.
  • 5. Burnt Slag crushing yields bonus Gold + Bio-Spores
Route Slag over Lava or a Flamethrower to create Burnt Slag, then drop it through a Kinetic Press.
  • 6. Logic signals consume 0 electricity
Use them liberally as an optimization layer. Anti-clog NOT-gates and flood-protection OR-gates cost nothing to run.
  • 7. Keep Logic circuits under 8 gates for time-critical reactions
Signal delay accumulates ~1 tick per gate. Use repeaters to refresh signal strength on longer chains.

⌨️ Keyboard Shortcuts

  • 1. C — Box-select structures to create Blueprints
Save your factory layouts as copyable strings you can paste anywhere.
  • 2. Ctrl + C / V — Copy and duplicate machine arrays
Build one module, then stamp out rows of identical production lines.
  • 3. Ctrl (hold) — Instant replacement mode
Hover any machine and tap to swap without first removing the old one.
  • 4. R — Toggle Filter Wall / Flow direction
Opens the filter UI on conveyors; cycles wall modes on physical barriers.
  • 5. T — Open Tech Tree
Check unlock costs and prerequisites without walking to the Research Terminal.
  • 6. Cmd/Ctrl + K — Open command palette search
Jump to any guide section, tool, or material entry without leaving the keyboard.

💎 Tier 6 & Endgame Optimization

  • 1. Split Voidbloom production 50/50 between Fluxite and Void Juice
Fluxite feeds mid-tier upgrades and Lumling paste; Void Juice feeds the Artifact Locator. Both are needed simultaneously.
  • 2. Maintain 200 units of Void Juice buffer before Locator sessions
Prevents brownouts during batch Tier 6 Synthesizer runs. Use insulated liquid tank buffers.
  • 3. Use the Artifact Locator opportunistically, not compulsively
Each ping consumes Void Juice and has a 30-second cooldown. Pings are most valuable when you are already exploring deep layers.
  • 4. Lumling happiness above 95% for 15 minutes triggers egg laying
Use Fluxite Paste or Void Juice Nectar + piped water troughs to maintain the threshold.
  • 5. Pen walls must be 2 blocks high to contain Lumlings
Single-height walls fail — Lumlings bounce over them when shoved by fast conveyor belts.
  • 6. Augment Forge reaches 5/5 at the fifth artifact — Triple Shot unlocks
After that, artifact hunting becomes pure upside. Swift II / Swift III follow at later artifact counts.
  • 7. Use Red, Blue, and Green wire channels to cross signals without interference
Three independent logic channels fit in tight factory spaces without crosstalk.
