Sandustry Lava Guide: Infinite Lava, Heat & Power Loops

THERMAL POWER BLUEPRINT

Lava is the strongest heat source in Sandustry. Once ignited from Cinder and stabilized into a 1200°C thermal basin, it acts as an infinite, non-depleting heat engine that roasts Slag into Gold, drives zero-power geothermal steam elevators, and creates closed-loop water generators.

TECHNIQUE 01On-Site Lava Generation

How to Make Infinite Lava from Cinder

Do NOT attempt to pipe natural Lava across the map. Instead create self-sustaining pools on-site:

  1. Mine subterranean Scoria blocks to obtain Cinder pebbles.
  2. Build an enclosed 4x4 basin with heat-resistant Granite or Ceramic tiles.
  3. Drop 16 Cinder pebbles into the basin and blast them with your Flamethrower.
  4. Cinder melts past its 650°C ignition threshold and liquifies into perpetual 1200°C Liquid Lava!
TECHNIQUE 02Atmospheric Elevator

The Geothermal Steam Elevator

Dripping single drops of Water onto Lava instantly flashes into Steam (Density -20).

  • • Steam rises automatically through vertical chimneys to the ceiling of your factory.
  • • Placing Cryoblaster cooling vents at the top re-condenses steam into liquid water.
  • • Result: Free vertical water transport with zero energy or pump costs!
// UPDATE #3 THERMAL OVERHAUL

Update #3 “Hungrier Lava” Thermodynamics & Buffer Sizing

THERMAL EQUILIBRIUM

In Early Access Update #3, the developers introduced “Hungrier Lava” mechanics: cold solids (such as incoming Sand, Sandstone, or raw Slag) absorb heat directly from the surrounding liquid lava pool. If your thermal reservoir is too small, cold items drop the fluid temperature below 600°C, causing the lava to quench and solidify back into useless Scoria!

4x4 Core Buffer Rule

Never operate a 1x1 or 2x2 lava basin. Always build a minimum 4x4 thermal core (16 liquid units). The thermal inertia of 16 units ensures continuous melting even during heavy conveyor surges.

Ceramic Tile Containment

Surround your basin with non-conductive blocks (Ceramic, Obsidian, or Refined Granite). Porous sand or sandstone walls leach heat into the surrounding crust and risk structural melting.

Inline Re-Ignition Loop

Position a single Flamethrower on a thermostat logic gate pointed at the basin floor. If fluid volume drops below 14 units, the Flamethrower fires automatically to melt incoming Cinder.

CLOSED-LOOP LOGISTICS

Struggling with water supply or energy-hungry pumps? This closed-loop geothermal generator exploits the density difference between liquid Water (100) and Steam (-20) to generate infinite vertical lift and zero-loss water recycling:

// VERTICAL CHIMNEY SCHEMATIC
[Ceiling +12m]: Cryoblaster Condenser Deck → Flashed Steam (-20) re-condenses into pure Water (100)
[Shaft +2m to +11m]: Sealed Granite Chimney → Steam accelerates vertically at 8.5 m/s with 0 electricity
[Contact Port +1m]: Drip Injector Nozzle → Injects regulated 0.2 units/s Water droplet onto Lava surface
[Thermal Bed 0m]: 1200°C Lava Core (4x4) → Flash-vaporizes droplet into 10x volume Steam instantaneously

Because zero water mass is consumed during phase change, this setup produces a 100% water balance while elevating fluids up to 30 vertical blocks without a single mechanical pump.

Automated Slag Roasting & Gold Reclamation Loop

15% GOLD BONUS

Raw Slag (density 135) is the most common waste byproduct of early mining and smelting. Instead of discarding it, route Slag across an active Lava heat channel:

1. Floatation Skimming

Because Slag (135) floats on Sand (150) and Lava (140), it skims smoothly across the surface without sinking.

2. 800°C Thermal Roasting

Passing over the 1200°C thermal bed roasts raw Slag into Burnt Slag (density 140) in exactly 2.0 seconds.

3. Kinetic Press Crushing

Feeding Burnt Slag into a Kinetic Press yields 15% high-grade Gold flakes plus Bio-Spores for Lumling farming.

♨️Infinite Heat Sources in Sandustry

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Once you establish a 4x4 Lava basin, it becomes a permanent, infinite heat source that never depletes. Here are the three renewable heat methods ranked by efficiency:

METHOD 1 · BEST

Lava Basin (Permanent)

Create a sealed Cinder pool → ignite with Flamethrower → Lava never expires. Infinite heat with zero ongoing resource cost.

METHOD 2 · MID

Flamethrower Inline

Place Flamethrowers along conveyor lines to continuously roast passing materials. Requires Burnt Residue fuel input.

METHOD 3 · LATE

Geothermal Steam Loop

Drip water onto Lava → Steam rises (Density -20) → cool with Cryoblaster → recycle 100% water. Infinite closed-loop thermal elevator.

💡 Pro tip: Combine all three methods in a single vertical shaft — Lava at the bottom heats water into steam, Flamethrower roasts Burnt Slag mid-shaft, and Cryoblaster captures steam at the top. See the Water Guide for flood prevention.

⚠️ Crucial Lava Containment Rules

1. Insulated T-Junctions:Lava will ignite and destroy normal wood belts and organic filters. Always route conveyor lines 2 blocks above lava beds or use stone/metal channels.
2. Steam Pressure Relief:Never seal a water-lava contact zone completely, or steam pressure will blow open surrounding terrain blocks. Always leave a vertical vent opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create infinite lava in Sandustry?

Mine Scoria blocks from deep underground to obtain Cinder pebbles. Place the Cinder in an enclosed 4x4 heat-resistant basin and ignite it with a Flamethrower. Once melted past its thermal threshold, it converts into self-sustaining Liquid Lava that never burns out.

What changed with lava in Update #3 (Hungrier Lava)?

In Update #3, developers introduced 'Hungrier Lava' mechanics where cold blocks absorb thermal energy faster. Lava pools smaller than 4 liquid units will freeze back into Scoria if fed cold solid materials too quickly. A minimum 4x4 pool buffer (16 liquid units) is now required for uninterrupted thermal operations.

How do I build a geothermal steam water generator in Sandustry?

Position a regulated water nozzle above a 1200°C Lava basin. Dripping single drops of water flashes them into rising Steam (density -20). The steam ascends a 12-block vertical chimney into a cold condensation ceiling, re-liquefying into pure water for a 100% closed-loop perpetual water generator.

How does slag roasting into gold work?

Raw Slag (density 135) floating across a 800°C+ lava surface roasts into Burnt Slag (density 140) in approximately 2.0 seconds. Crushing Burnt Slag in a Kinetic Press yields a 15% high-grade Gold recovery bonus plus Bio-Spores.

How do I cool lava back into solid stone?

Spray the lava pool with a Cryoblaster or drop Snow/Ice directly into the basin. Quenched lava instantly solidifies into Scoria blocks, which can be re-mined for a 100% reversible thermal loop.
